Most Reliable Flea and Tick Preventatives for Dogs

I hate to see my dog scratching himself endlessly. Itching and scratching takes away from their cuteness.

Dog owners know the pain of summer, when the scratching ramps up a notch and your beloved pet is left doing everything he can to relieve the flea bites.

Why must fleas exist in this world? And why do they proliferate so much in the summer, feasting on our furbaby’s flesh?

As a responsible pet owner, we need to protect our pets from fleas, ticks, and all kinds of external blood-sucking parasites that will affect their health. An unprotected dog would soon drive you crazy!

Don’t give ticks and fleas the chance to multiply and make their palace in your doggy’s (used-to-be) immaculate fur. Get these products ASAP so your dog will keep enjoying his outside time without any discomfort.

1. Hartz Flea & Tick Shampoos and Sprays

Hartz UltraGuard Plus Aloe Flea & Tick Dog Spray is effective in getting rid of fleas and ticks as well as preventing their re-entry into your dog’s fur. The repellant is effective up to 7 days and prevents remaining flea eggs from hatching up to 1 month. We love this product because it’s very easy to apply, just squeeze the spray nozzle bottle. It’s also one of the fastest-acting products in the market today. Available in pet stores and big box stores, as well as online.

Please be aware that this product uses chemicals that are better suited to pups three months or older. It doesn’t irritate sensitive puppy skin/fur and soothes already irritated skin for your dog’s ultimate relief and comfort.

2. Frontline Plus Flea and Tick

When it comes to the most popular names in flea and tick prevention, Frontline is at the top of the list and is one of the most well-known brands in the entire world thanks to how effective it is. This product comes in a package that is quite easy to use because of how you only need to apply it topically. And the best part is that the entire formulation will last for a span of an entire month so that your dog will stay protected from ticks, fleas, lice, and mites.

Frontline will give you the confidence you need because of how you know your dog is protected from ticks. You can allow your furry friend to play outside without ever having to ear that it might get ticks even during tick season. This product is said to be more effective for larger breeds of dogs that are somewhere heavier than 45 pounds. So, if you have a large dog, you might want to use Frontline for it instead.

3. Bayer K9 Advantix II

Bayer’s Advantix II is another great product coming from a well-known brand when it comes to flea and tick prevention. Bayer might be known for being effective against insects and other pests, but it is just as good when it comes to preventing ticks on your beloved pet dogs. Advantix II is said to work just as fast as other products, as it can show results within a span of only 12 hours. On top of that, it is even waterproof so that you can give your fur baby a bath even after applying Advantix II.

If you have a pet that is on the smaller side, Bayer Advantix II is the best you can use. It must be used for dogs that are older than seven weeks. And after applying this topical treatment, it will kill off ticks in a matter of hours. You will also love the fact that it works well against fleas and mosquitoes as well.

4. Pet Naturals Flea + Tick Repellant Spray

If you are looking for something with the best natural ingredients for your dog, then Pet Naturals Flea + Tick Repellant Spray will do the trick. This product contains all-natural ingredients that you will be sure to be safe for your dogs. But, since it does not have any synthetic ingredients, you may want to apply it more often than you should as it does not have the same potency as other tick preventatives. But rest assured this is an effective product so long as you are using it frequently.

Another reason why you should love this tick preventative is that it comes in a non-stick formula that your dog will enjoy very well. Simply spraying it on your pet and in any affected area will show results, but it must be done frequently if you want it to be as effective as other products made with synthetic ingredients.

5. Vet’s Best Flea + Tick Home Spray

Vet’s Best has a different approach in preventing ticks and other types of parasites in your dog. Instead of directly killing the ticks on your dog, it is much more effective as an all-around preventative. It is more effective when used to kill ticks that have already spread out from your dogs and from other nearby animals and have already found temporary homes on furniture or even on the floor.

In other words, this preventative is similar to a disinfectant in the sense that you use it for killing ticks around your house, so that kill off any ticks that are yet to latch onto your dog. However, you can also use it to kill the ticks that are already on your dog. You might want to spray it on your dog’s legs, which are known to be danger zones after it played outside.

6. Seresto Flea and Tick Collar

If you are not looking for a spray or a topical treatment to prevent ticks on your dogs, then you might want to go for a flea collar instead. Seresto’s flea collar should be one of your top choices if you are shopping for an effective flea collar. And even if you are also using sprays and other topical treatments such as spot-on, Seresto Flea and Tick Collar can be used as a supplementary preventative measure.

Seresto Flea and Tick Collar work similarly to spot-on treatments because of how it contains chemicals that repel and kill ticks on your dog. It works within a day and may actually be better than other products because of how long it lasts when compared to spot-on products. This should also be one of the better choices for you if you have a dog that cannot take oral treatments or if you feel that topical treatments are not too safe for your pet.

7. Flea Away All Natural Flea, Tick, and Mosquito Repellant for Dogs

There are plenty of different ways to prevent ticks on your dogs. While most people would go for sprays or topical spot-on treatments, you can also go for something that your dog can actually ingest. Flea Away is a good choice because, other than the fact that it is effective because of how it gets absorbed into your dog’s bloodstream, it comes with ingredients that are as natural as possible. Natural is the only way to go for you in this kind of a situation because you have to take into consideration the fact that your dog will be ingesting this.

Instead of using chemicals, Flea Away uses effective vitamins and minerals that will promote your pet dog’s immune system so that it will be able to fight off and repel any kind of parasites such as ticks and fleas. On top of that, it also comes with other benefits. It is great at improving your dog’s coat and is also promotes overall health. But if you want this product to be more effective, you may want to use it in conjunction with other products.

8. Richard’s Organic Flea and Tick Shampoo

Your dog may be in the middle of an infestation and may need instant relief from ticks. So before using other products, you may want to use Richard’s Shampoo first as the first step to prevent ticks. It was specially formulated to instantly kill off ticks on your dogs so that you may be able to use other preventative measures after giving your dog a bath.

But what you will really love about Richard’s Organic Shampoo is that it only has organic ingredients and is free from chemicals. Instead, it makes use of essential oils that are great at killing ticks. The good thing about being an organic shampoo is that it is good for dogs with sensitive and flaky skin that cannot handle harsh chemicals. It has an effect that may be able to last for a span of four weeks. And while this shampoo is indeed effective, you may want to use in together with other preventative measures to make sure that your dog is as free from ticks as possible.
